Supporting Small School Bands

The Grays Harbor College Foundation proudly supports the arts by fostering young musical talent through the Small School Band Festival. This annual event, now a beloved tradition, invites thirteen small high school bands to participate in a daylong festival, offering a unique opportunity for students to experience the excitement and camaraderie of a large-scale musical event.

The festival, led by Dr. Bill Dyer, GHC Music Faculty, is designed to provide these young musicians with a comprehensive, enriching experience. Throughout the day, the bands perform for one another, participate in clinics, and come together for a collective performance on stage at the Bishop Center. This collaborative environment not only enhances their musical skills but also builds a sense of community and shared purpose among the students.

Support from the GHC Foundation is allocated to several essential aspects of the festival, covering the purchase of music, transportation assistance for schools, t-shirts for the participants, snacks to keep the young musicians energized, and wages for three judges who provide valuable feedback during the clinics. The judges’ expertise is instrumental in offering constructive critiques that help students grow as musicians.

One of the unique challenges for students from small schools is the limited opportunity to travel and participate in festivals. This event bridges that gap, giving these young musicians a chance to showcase their talents and learn from their peers in a supportive, encouraging environment. Each year, the festival attracts an average of 125 students, all eager to share their love for music and gain new experiences.

“We are thrilled to support the Small School Band Festival,” said Lisa J. Smith, Executive Director of the GHC Foundation. “This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to invest in programs that enhance educational opportunities and foster community engagement. Music and the arts are vital components of a well-rounded education, and we are committed to ensuring that students from all backgrounds have access to these enriching experiences.”

The impact of the festival extends beyond the day’s events. It ignites a passion for music that students carry with them, inspiring them to pursue further musical endeavors and fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

By investing in the Small School Band Festival, the GHC Foundation continues to support the arts and provide meaningful opportunities for young musicians. This initiative not only benefits the students but also enriches the cultural fabric of the community, highlighting the importance of music education in shaping well-rounded, creative individuals.
