Supporting Student Parents

Student Yi Lund holds a baby.

Another basic need which frequently presents a barrier to students is the need for childcare support. For students who do not qualify for state aid toward childcare expenses, the out-of-pocket cost for a single child’s care can reach close to $2,000 per month.

The Foundation recognizes that childcare is an expensive necessity for students with little ones. To allow student parents to move forward in their educational journeys with fewer financial worries, the Foundation offers funding for childcare through the Childcare Assistance Grant program. Grant applications are open to students throughout the academic year, as long as funds are available.

One recent Childcare Assistance Grant recipient, Yi Lund, is a student in GHC’s nursing program who aspires to become a pediatric nurse at a local hospital. In her thank-you letter to the donor, she wrote, “Before attending Grays Harbor College, I was a stay-at-home mom, dedicating all my time to my family. Although this has been rewarding, I always held the goal of furthering my education to build a better future for us. The financial burden of childcare was my biggest obstacle. This grant has lifted that weight. I can now attend lectures and clinicals without constant worrying of how I will afford childcare, and I can use my limited study time more effectively. Knowing my baby is in safe, reliable care while I am in class provides immense peace of mind and allows me to fully engage with my education.”

The Foundation’s ability to help fill these basic needs for GHC students is reliant upon the generosity of our wonderful community of donors. To support student assistance programs like the Childcare Assistance Grant, please visit our giving page.

Thank you for helping to keep GHC students and their families fed, healthy, and cared for.
