Meet Kevin DeGraw

Embracing Forestry with the Marvin and Mary-Lynne Reiner Family Endowment Scholarship

Kevin DeGraw, a dedicated student in the Forest Resource Management program at Grays Harbor College, has expressed his deep gratitude for receiving the Marvin and Mary-Lynne Reiner Family Endowment Scholarship. This generous support plays a crucial role in Kevin’s journey to becoming a skilled forester, allowing him to focus on his studies and professional growth.

In his thank you letter, Kevin shared how the scholarship alleviates financial pressures and strengthens his connection to the community. “Knowing that others care about this community and invest in its future is comforting and encouraging,” Kevin wrote. “Your support will help provide me with the ability to stay focused on learning the necessary skills to become a well-qualified forester.”

Originally from Vancouver, WA, Kevin’s background includes eight years as a therapeutic wilderness guide in Utah, where he used his Social Sciences degree to assist young people in crisis. Returning to the Pacific Northwest, he is now focused on forest management and has become an active member of the Society of American Foresters at GHC, where he was elected Chair for this academic school year. Additionally, Kevin secured an internship with Rayonier, further advancing his practical education in forestry.

The Marvin and Mary-Lynne Reiner Family Endowment, established in 1989, honors the legacy of Marvin and Mary-Lynne Reiner, who were deeply committed to Grays Harbor College and the community. After retiring from Reiner’s Sporting Goods & Honda in Aberdeen, the Reiners continued to support their alma mater. Their children, Cathy, Cynthia, Wendy, and Jeff, recently permanently endowed the scholarship, ensuring that their parents’ legacy will benefit future generations.

Kevin’s enthusiasm for learning about forest management, ecological systems, and sustainable practices reflects his dedication to the field. “Learning about forest management practices and having the opportunity to do all these things in a high-quality program like Grays Harbor College’s is exciting and confirms that I made the right choice,” he said.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Reiner family for their commitment to supporting students like Kevin.
