Luella Jean Mortimer spent her life dreaming of becoming a nurse, a dream she realized later in life by earning her LPN degree from Grays Harbor College at the age of 50. Her dedication to nursing left a lasting impression on her granddaughter, Nicole Mortimer Jurgens, who followed in her footsteps and became a registered nurse.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nicole was in the United Kingdom where her RN license was not recognized. Undeterred, she worked as a healthcare assistant in COVID units at her local hospital. From her efforts, she earned $2,541.65, which she generously donated to the GHC Foundation to establish a scholarship in her grandmother’s honor.
Today, the Mortimer family continues to honor Luella’s legacy through this annual scholarship. Their generosity has had a significant impact on students pursuing nursing degrees at GHC, helping them advance their education and careers while celebrating Luella Jean Mortimer’s enduring influence.
