Creating a Pipeline for Our Community’s Newest Commercial Truck Drivers

Commercial truck drivers are in strong demand regionally and across the nation. Recognizing the critical need for skilled drivers, the Grays Harbor College Foundation took proactive steps to support individuals pursuing this vital career.

When the GHC Foundation’s Board of Directors learned that the short-term training programs for commercial truck driving are not covered by traditional state and federal financial aid, they took action. Through a variety of scholarship funds and partnerships with local foundation’s like the Grays Harbor Community Foundation and Kelsey Foundation, the Board designated scholarships specifically for residents of Grays Harbor and Pacific County. These scholarships are designed to offset the cost of tuition and help aspiring commercial truck drivers achieve their certification without the burden of financial barriers.

“The out-of-pocket cost for these certifications can be a significant obstacle for many people,” states Lisa J. Smith, Executive Director of the GHC Foundation. “By removing this barrier, we are not only helping individuals enter a high-demand field but also making a positive social and economic impact on our community.”

The scholarship initiative has already begun to yield promising results, with many recipients successfully completing their training and entering the workforce as certified commercial truck drivers. This effort is helping to address the shortage of skilled drivers, ensuring that goods can be transported efficiently and supporting the economic vitality of our region.

The GHC Foundation is committed to continuing its support for the commercial truck driving program, recognizing the importance of this career pathway for the local economy. Through the generosity of donors and the collaborative efforts of community partners, the Foundation aims to provide ongoing opportunities for individuals to pursue their goals and contribute to the workforce.
