Coast Trio Shares the Power of String Instruments with Grade School Students

The Grays Harbor College Foundation is proud to support initiatives that bring the joy of music to young students, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts. One such initiative is the Coast Trio program, a string instrument ensemble that captivates elementary school students across Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties with a unique blend of classical and contemporary music.

In Spring 2022, the Foundation sponsored Coast Trio, featuring talented musicians Debra Akerlund, a member of the Tacoma Symphony, and Leslie and John O’Brien, members of the Grays Harbor Symphony Orchestra at GHC. Together, they travel on behalf of the Bishop Center for Performing Arts and Grays Harbor College, bringing their expertise and passion for music to local schools.

Armed with only three instruments – the viola, violin, and cello – Coast Trio delivers dynamic and engaging 60-minute performances that leave a lasting impression on young audiences. Their repertoire spans a wide range of music, from the timeless compositions of Beethoven to the contemporary hits of Lady Gaga. This diverse selection not only showcases the versatility of string instruments but also connects with children’s varied musical tastes, making the experience both educational and entertaining.

The performances by Coast Trio are designed to be interactive and inspiring. By demonstrating the capabilities of their instruments and sharing the stories behind the music, the trio sparks curiosity and excitement among the students. The children are often in awe of the power and beauty of the performances, which can ignite a newfound interest in learning to play an instrument or deepening their appreciation for music.

The impact of Coast Trio’s visits extends beyond the immediate joy of the performance. Exposure to live music at a young age can enhance cognitive development, improve academic performance, and foster emotional well-being. For many of these students, attending a Coast Trio performance may be their first experience with live classical music, making it a memorable and potentially transformative event.

The GHC Foundation’s support of Coast Trio is part of its broader commitment to enriching the educational experiences of students in our community. By bringing high-quality arts programs to local schools, the Foundation helps to bridge the gap in arts education, particularly in areas where such opportunities might be limited. These efforts are made possible through the generosity of donors who understand the value of investing in the arts and the profound impact it can have on young minds.
